A 1888: Requires minimum of one school bus aide for every 15 special needs students on school bus

A 1888

Requires minimum of one school bus aide for every 15 special needs students on school bus

NJEA supports A-1888 (Muoio, Benson, Vaineri Huttle, Gusciora, Caputo, Zwicker, Eustace) which would establish a minimum ratio of school bus aides to special needs students on a school bus.  This bill will ensure that a school bus has on board at least one school bus aide for every 15 students with special needs.

The bill will provide relief to students and families alike who worry about their children getting the attention they need while on the school bus.  It cannot solely be the responsibility of the bus driver whose main responsibility is to drive and pay attention to the road.

The standards established in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act recommend the ratio in this bill.  If we are truly concerned about the safety of our children on the bus, we need to make them our highest priority.  This bill will make all our children safer on busses, as drivers will be able to more carefully focus on driving.

NJEA urges you to vote “yes” on A-1888.
