Requires meeting between student and appropriate school personnel after multiple suspensions or proposed expulsion from public school to identify behavior or health difficulties
NJEA is seeking amendments to A-4150 (Lampitt, Egan Jones, Timberlake). This bill would require a principal to convene a meeting with a student and school psychologist, or other professional if a school does not have a psychologist, when a student has been suspended multiple times or risks expulsion. The meeting is to identify any behavior or health difficulties experienced by the student.
While this is a worthwhile meeting, we ask that the bill be amended to allow the principal to choose the appropriate mental health or counseling professional for the meeting. As written, the bill requires the meeting to be with the school psychologist unless a district does not have one. The school psychologist might not be the best choice, depending on a student’s relationship with other school professionals or a student’s needs. In addition, such meetings could place an undue burden on a school psychologist.
NJEA asks that you amend this bill.
