A 425 S 2489
Displaying Child Abuse Hotline in Schools
NJEA supports A-425 (Mosquera, Jones, Holley, McKnight, Downey)/S-2489 (Cruz-Perez, Turner) which requires a board of education to prominently display information about the Department of Children and Families’ (DCF) State Central Registry, a toll-free hotline for reporting child abuse in each school within a school district.
NJEA believes the health and welfare of our students must be assured and protected. The DCF State Central Registry is an important tool used to report the abuse of a child. Often a school staff member is the first to identify potential instances of child abuse or neglect. According to the Department of Children and Families (DCF), school staff are generally the primary reporters of abuse and make up almost 20% of reports. In addition, by prominently displaying the hotline in schools, children in abusive situations may be encouraged to reach out for assistance.
We urge you to vote “yes” on S-2489.
