Development of guidelines for school districts regarding transgender students
NJEA supports S-3067 (Ruiz, Vitale) which requires the Commissioner of Education to develop guidelines for school districts regarding transgender students. This legislation also requires the Commissioner to provide districts with guidance and resources regarding professional development opportunities and developmentally appropriate information about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth issues.
Earlier this year, the federal government withdrew guidance issued to school districts intended to protect the safety and civil rights of transgender students. The purpose of this legislation is to help provide direction for New Jersey’s schools in addressing the concerns and needs of transgender students, as well as to assist districts in establishing their own policies and procedures to ensure supportive and nondiscriminatory environments.
NJEA is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all students in our public schools. We have always sought to increase respect, understanding, acceptance, and sensitivity toward all individuals and groups in our diverse society. This legislation will help to ensure that transgender students are protected and welcomed in our public schools.
NJEA urges you to vote “yes” on S-3067.
