S 3770  A 6118

Establishes the New Jersey Economic and Fiscal Policy Review Commission to consider “employee retirement, health care, and other benefits, (AKA, a permanent Pathway to ‘Progress’ Commission)

S3770 (Sarlo, Oroho, Sweeney)  A6118 (Greenwald)  NJEA opposes S3770/A6118, which would create another costly, permanent, bureaucratic panel, filled with political appointees, for the express purpose of promoting the same failed Pathway to “Progress” agenda that has been used to unfairly scapegoat public employees for the state’s many fiscal failures. It makes no provision to include public employee representatives in discussions and recommendation that would directly affect the terms and conditions of their employment and their economic security. The bill requires the panel to consider “employee retirement, health care, and other benefits.” The recommendations of this bureaucratic body would have a direct impact on public employees and their families with no input from those employees. It represents a return to Chris Christie’s approach of finger-pointing and blame. New Jersey has demonstrated the ability to achieve meaningful reforms when all parties are part of the process. This panel would represent an abandonment of that productive approach.
