A 4545
Requires school districts to include instruction on certain events involving racial discrimination and social justice as part of implementation of New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Social Studies for middle school students
A 4545 (Conaway and Murphy) NJEA supports incorporating instruction on events of racial discrimination and social justice that have occurred throughout US History. It is critical that our students gain a deeper understanding of the challenges African Americans and all people of color have faced in this country. We thank the sponsors for accepting our recommendations and allowing instruction to be integrated throughout the scope of our learning standards, as well as allowing the Amistad Commission to consult on learning activities and resources for instruction. Furthermore, we continue to urge that this instruction not be limited to the social studies curriculum of middle school students. Events of racial discrimination and social justice can be taught across all grade levels. We look forward to working with the Legislature and Department of Education on this issue moving forward.
NJEA urges you to vote yes on A4545.
