S 129 : Requires all students enrolled in grade eight to have certain physical examination that includes cardiac component

S 129 (Diegnan)NJEA and its affiliate, the New Jersey State School Nurses Association (NJSSNA), support this requirement, but recommend that it apply to students in sixth grade, as sixth graders are already required to see their primary care practitioner to obtain state-mandated vaccinations.  While we support this bill, we are concerned about what happens when parents don’t take their children for a well visit. In this case, the school nurse becomes responsible for seeking consent for a school physician exam, adding to their already-heavy workload.  Finally, we thank the sponsor for changing the implementation timeline of this bill so that we do not add to the burden COVID has created for our school nurses.
