“College Mental Health Services Act”; establishes grant program for public institutions of higher education and requires public institutions of higher education to report certain information concerning mental health treatment and suicides

S 1070 (Corrado) The mental health and wellbeing of New Jersey’s students is paramount. As mental health issues continue to rise on college campuses, institutions of higher education face increased challenges in providing mental health services and supports to students. This legislation seeks to assist our institutions of higher education by establishing a College Mental Health Services Grant Program, which would provide grants to institutions of higher education and county colleges to establish or improve access to mental health services on the campuses.

While NJEA supports improving access to mental health services for our higher education students, we do have concerns regarding the collection of certain mental health data and the level of data required to be posted on an institution’s website as proposed in this legislation. The collection and publication of such data may deter some students from seeking the mental health assistance they need. We look forward to continuing to work with the Legislature on this important issue.

NJEA urges you to SUPPORT S1070..
